I was disheartened to read that Nana Mouskouri is retiring from touring. When I was a kid, one of my favourite things to do was to play LPs at my aunt's house. Selections were limited and I was a slave to the albums I liked, so that usually meant one of four choices: The Best of ABBA; Michael Jackson's Thriller; the St. Elmo's Fire Soundtrack or Mouskouri's Roses and Sunshine. Childhood memories are a funny thing. I had to look up Roses and Sunshine because the title was gone from my head and I really only ever put it on for the song Nickels and Dimes anyway. I remember adoring that song twenty five years ago, but listening to a clip of it today stirs no emotion. It doesn't sound familiar at all and is far removed from the music I listen to now. Yet, I do still have a nostalgic fondness for Mouskouri, the lady with the black glasses, whose life I know nothing about. I wonder why some favourites stick with you and others fade away. The Winner Takes It All brings to mind vivid recollections of being in the living room where the turntable resided, singing/humming my foolhead off (internally). Ditto for Man in Motion, St. Elmo's Instrumental Love Theme and Georgetown. Oh, and Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'....but Nickels and Dimes is without rhythm now; just a tuneless phrase that runs through my head on occasion. Funny.

Nana Mouskouri se retire du monde du spectacle; la diva a fait ses adieux à la scène musicale internationale !
La star grecque de la musique Nana Mouskouri, a récemment fait ses adieux à la scène musicale internationale. A 74 ans, la diva a décidé de faire ses adieux au monde du spectacle.

Star internationale, Nana Mouskouri vient de se retirer de la scène musicale. Agée de 74 ans, la célébrité qui a, à son actif, une cinquantaine d’années de carrière derrière elle, poursuit sa tournée d’adieu entamée il y a bientôt trois ans ce, à travers l’exagone. Celle qui a vendu plus de 300 millions d’albums dans le monde et interprété ses chansons dans sept langues, a été et reste le symbole d’un changement radical dans le monde musical de son pays la Grèce.
Pour la suite de cette tournée, elle se rendra en Allemagne, en Asie, en Grande Bretagne, en Amérique du Nord et du Sud, en passant par la France. Le 23 Juillet dernier, Nana Mouskouri donnait son dernier concert en Grèce, au théâtre d’Hérode Atticus, au pied du Parthénon.
Rappelons que c’est à l'âge de quinze ans, que Nana Mouskouri s’ouvre au monde de la musique au Conservatoire hellénique d’Athènes. Elle y étudiera pendant huit ans le chant, le piano et l'harmonie.
En 1958, elle démarre véritablement sa carrière ; une carrière qui la conduira à enregistrer plus de 1 550 chansons, dans les sonorités qu’on lui connaît c’est-à-dire des balades et, dans diverses langues notamment l’allemand, l’anglais, l’espagnol, le français, le grec évidemment et, l’italien.
Personnalité notoire à travers la planète, ce titre, lui permettra de se voir confier par l'UNICEF, une mission d'ambassadrice en 1993. Après nombre de succès à son actif : «Chanter La Vie» ; «Quand Tu Chantes» ; «Soledad» ; « Tu t’en vas » et bien d’autres encore…
En 2005, alors qu’elle atteint ses 71 ans, Nana Mouskouri entreprend une tournée d'adieux internationale, allant de l'Europe à l'Australie. Elle sera promue en 2006, au grade d'officier de la légion d'honneur. Une belle carrière et de surcroît, une carrière bien pleine. Une carrière consacrée le 07 décembre 2006 par la SACEM qui lui décernera le «Grand prix Sacem 2006 de la chanson française à l'étrange ».

Nana Mouskouri has bid adieu to a half-century in music with a farewell concert in her native Greece at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens.
Fans filled the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus on July 23, 2008 to hear the 73-year-old songstress. Hours earlier, the city of Athens bestowed its gold medal on Mouskouri, who has been on a worldwide farewell tour since she announced her plans to retire three years ago.
One of the grand dames of international music, the bespectacled performer sold more than 300 million recordings during her career.
As well, I met my wife, music publicist and radio tracker Anya Wilson when she worked with Mouskouri in the mid ‘80s.
For decades, Mouskouri was managed by Montreal impresario Sam Gesser who passed away earlier this year.
During a nostalgic tribute, held a few months ago in the Cinquième Salle of Montreal’s Place des Arts where Gesser had an office for many years, Mouskouri, in a video, recalled her 45-year association with Gesser, whom she credited with being largely responsible for what she achieved.
She recalled that in the ’60s she had been advised not to perform a Quebec song because it was too political. “Sam told me, ‘Listen only to your heart and instincts,’ and I did. So began a great relationship with Canada and, of course, Sam…
“He showed me the treasures of Canada,” she said, introducing her to both Anglophone and francophone singers.
Mouskouri has a huge following in Quebec and had mentioned a poignant moment in the province when first discussing her decision to retire.
"I still remember, the saddest thing that I really felt in my life is when (opera legend) Maria Callas died, and I remember I was in Montreal," she said. "I was going to do a talk show on the radio and just before I go in, they tell me outside, 'Nana, not to be surprised, something terrible happened and they may ask you about that,' and I was so sad when I heard it."
What bothered her so much, Mouskouri said, was that Callas had continued singing publicly despite failing vocal abilities.
"She didn't finish as she should have finished, for me," Mouskouri said.” Her life was very close to me and I wouldn't like to have a problem like this."
