Nana Mouskouri says goodbye in Athens

After a long successful international career Nana Mouskouri has decided to stop at the age of 73! Thursday evening she is giving her very last concert – and it all ends in her birth country, Greece at Herodion near Acropolis.
10,000 people will attend the full out concert that will mark the end of a very long successful career that started in 1957 after having studied classical music at the conservatoire. Her international career started in 1962 where she met Quincy Jones who help her started in New York. The year after she moved to Paris that become her residence for many years.
She represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1963 and finished 8th with the song À force de prier and today most people wont remember the fact that she took part in the contest. Her big career is well known across the world and many will miss her.
Nana has wanted to end it all in her birth country, Greece and she makes it clear that it will be a final goodbye to her fans tomorrow evening in Athens. There will be no more concerts from the Greek songbird: “I have wished that the final goodbye to my fans should take place in my country’s capital”, Nana Mouskouri says and continue: “Now it is time to step aside and make space for younger people”.

Famous Greek singer Nana Mouskouri says goodbye to fans in Athens with two concerts at the Herod Atticus Theatre on Wednesday (July 23rd) and Thursday. The concerts are part of her farewell tour of Europe, Australia, Asia, South America, the United States and Canada. Mouskouri celebrates a half-century in music with more than 300 million albums sold worldwide.

Athen - Die griechische Hauptstadt Athen hat am Mittwoch die griechische Sängerin Nana Mouskouri (73) («Weiße Rosen aus Athen») mit der Goldenen Medaille der Stadt geehrt.
Sängerin Nana Mouskouri erhielt die Goldene Medaille der Stadt Athen.
Unter den geladenen Gästen war auch Berlins Regierender Bürgermeister Klaus Wowereit (SPD). «Ich bin glücklich, dass wir Gäste sein dürfen. Wir alle sind große Fans von Nana», sagte Wowereit der Deutschen Presse-Agentur dpa. Die Medaille verlieh Athens Bürgermeister Nikitas Kaklamanis mit den Worten: «Der Beifall für Dich, Nana Mouskouri, wird in unseren Herzen nie enden.»
Am Mittwoch- und Donnerstagabend sollte Nana Mouskouri mit zwei Konzerten im antiken Amphitheater Herodion unterhalb der Akropolis ihre weltweite Abschiedstournee beenden. Alle 10 000 Eintrittskarten der beiden Abschiedsabende waren schon Wochen vorher ausverkauft. «Ich wollte hier in der Hauptstadt meines Landes endgültig Abschied von allen meinen Fans nehmen», sagte Mouskouri im griechischen Fernsehen. «Es ist Zeit, zur Seite zu treten und jüngeren Menschen Platz zu machen.»

Den grekiska sångerskan Nana Mouskouri tackar för sig, skriver danska nyhetsbyrån Ritzau. I nästa vecka ger hon sina två allra sista konserter. Då har hon nått det sista stoppet på sin avskedsturné, Aten.
Med sina 73 år är Nana Mouskouri väl förtjänt av en lugnare tillvaro och hon har sagt att hon inte tänker göra som så många andra artister, och följa upp sin avskedsturné med ytterligare avskedsturnéer. Biljetterna till nästa veckas konserter är för länge sedan slutsålda, rapporterar Ritzau.
– Jag har velat säga ett slutgiltigt farväl till mina fans här i mitt lands huvudstad, säger sångerskan till grekisk tv.
Nana Mouskouri sjunger såväl klassisk musik som grekisk folkmusik och Mikis Theodorakis. Hon är en av de kvinnliga artister som har sålt mest skivor i världen.

Mouskouri gives last concert
Internationally-acclaimed Greek singer Nana Mouskouri gave the last concert of her long career at the Herod Atticus Odeon on Wednesday night, as Greek and visiting foreign officials looked on. Earlier the same evening, Mouskouri had been received the City of Athens Gold Medal of Merit from Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis at Athens' City Hall, in acknowledgement of her extensive contribution to music and culture.
The concert brought to a close a 50-year international music career featuring more than 350 gold and platinum albums and 300 million album sales globally.
"Today we are redressing a historical oversight - the fact that the entire world has paid tribute to her, yet the city which she promoted through her personality and song has never done so. I, therefore, ask you to accept the highest honorary distinction of the city which you sang about and celebrated, the City of Athens Gold Medal of Merit, " Kaklamanis noted as he presented Mouskouri with the award.
Accepting, Mouskouri referred to her love of Greece and of her debt to music, and stressed that "the honour I am receiving today is something I will never forget."
As guests of Mayor Kaklamanis, Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit and Luxembourg Mayor Paul Helminger attended the medal award ceremony. Together with Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou and Paris Mayor Bertrand Delano?, who also accepted Mayor Kaklamanis’ invitation, they attended the concert at the Herod Atticus theatre.
The Ambassadors in Athens to France, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg and Slovenia, as well as the charges d’affaires of Spain, Germany, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Poland and Sweden, were also present at the ceremony.
