The Greek Goddess

As I stated earlier, I'm ready to go to the big and bright venues, far far away from the dark clubs and pubs, thank you very much. And there it was, our first gig at the Royal Albert Hall. Can we get any fancier than that may I ask you? It's impressive, trust me. The Royal Albert Hall, since its opening in 1871 the Royal Albert Hall has been the majestic venue for all great performances even often frequented by the members of the Royal family. The hall was largely built with funds subscribed by private individuals and operating under a Royal Charter, the Hall has fulfilled this role for over a century without public funding. It's a classical but superb building on the side of Hide Park and just fumes an air of high class but not the pompous kinda high class, more of an intimate and retro high class. You just can imagine yourself back in the days of the 19th century where the lords and ladies would visit the venue just to socialize with those whom were considered important. Ah, those would have been the days. Right, reality check now, we're in the 21st century and the venue has adapted itself quite smartly to the high technical standards of today.
So today on our list was nobody less that Nana Mouskouri. She's doing this farewell concert tours of Europe, Australia, Asia, South America, the United States, and Canada. Farewell sounds a bit scary these days as all the old glories are just starting their come backs. But don't forget that Nana is already 73, so she's just saying goodbye gracefully. During an interview with The Australian newspaper, when asked why this would be her final concert series, Mouskouri said she wanted to retire on a high note. "I never thought that I would grow that old. It is better really to stop while you are standing well on your feet. I just want to be proud and in very good form and thank the audience for all this love", she said. Good on her!

She may have looked a bit older since the 70's where I remember her from but the time has had no effect on her voice. She still sounded the Nana Mouskouri from back in the days.

She used to work with people like Harry Belafonte and Quincy Jones but farewell tour is just her and a single white rose. It has something very powerful and also something very lonely. It brings a kind of sadness and I can't help thinking about her son who due too sheer embarrassment of resembling his mother he fled to America and changed his identity. I wonder if they ever reconciled?

Anyway, it was Nana night and we loved it.

A Grecian goodbye
By John Aizlewood, Evening Standard 30.10.07

Now a venerable 73-year-old with suspiciously jet-black hair and a wardrobe of sparkly tent dresses seemingly designed by Dame Edna Everage, Ioanna "Nana" Mouskouri has bowed to the inevitable and last night marked her final London appearance. That the film projectionist's daughter from Crete couldn't quite fill the Albert Hall, despite selling a staggering 350 million albums, suggests she's wise to go now.

However, the former MEP was departing neither quietly nor quickly, hence two sets, lasting nearly three hours. Backed by a bouzouki-free sextet, before an audience predominantly comprised of heterosexual Greeks and homosexual British, she sang in Greek, German, Italian, French (a fabulously dramatic version of Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall) and even English.

If reduced vocal capacity meant she never quite got to grips with Bridge Over Troubled Water, her opening assault on Amazing Grace was a showstopper before the show had really started. Attempting Kris Kristofferson's Me And Bobby McGee was endearingly bonkers, although not as endearingly bonkers as singing most of her signature White Rose Of Athens in German.

More eccentric still, in between accepting gifts of flowers (by the encore, the front of the stage looked like a roadside shrine to a recent traffic accident victim), she told a somewhat downbeat version of her life story, concentrating on her "years of sorrow". And, at the end, she tackled My Way, forgot most of the verses, flashed a well-turned calf and tottered into the twilight. We cannot possibly see her like again.

Nana Mouskouri - The Farewell Tour
- The Sage Gateshead
Trained as an opera singer and influenced by Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf, Nana Mouskouri has had an extraordinary global career. In the 60s, she had a hit in the UK with My Colouring Book and won the Eurovision Song Contest: she also starred in the TV show, ‘Nana and Friends’, and released ‘Over and Over’, which spent almost two years in the UK charts. The 70s saw this success continue, and an expansion into folk and country repertoire: in the 80s she had another UK hit, Only Love, and has continued to tour and record: she has now decided to retire on a high note with this tour.

Swan song for Nana
Farewell ... Nana Mouskouri.

By Terry Kelly
GREEK singing star Nana Mouskouri will serenade her Tyneside fans for the last time this month after deciding to call it a day.
She is preparing to bring down the curtain on a 50-year performing career, and her farewell tour includes an appearance at The Sage Gateshead.Listening to talk enthusiastically about her life and times, it's hard to believe she's now in her 70s.A familiar face on British TV in the 1960s and 1970s, Mouskouri has sold 230 million records, and recorded no fewer than 1,500 songs over the course of a singing career spanning more than half a century. The Greek singer's black glasses and shoulder-length hair are instantly recognisable to millions of fans worldwide. However, a broken ankle several years ago led to a three-month spell in hospital for Mouskouri, and that set her thinking about winding up her performing career.A farewell tour which started back in 2005 will reach Tyneside at the end of this month."After the accident, I was talking with my husband and started to think how I could say I love my fans as I step down from the stage," she said."This is the first time I've toured the UK for five or six years, but I've appeared in Newcastle many times before."My farewell tour will be a kind of retrospective. Each country I play is different, and I change my repertoire according to where I'm playing." Despite her impending exit from the live stage, Mouskouri is busier than ever, with a biographical memoir and new CDs due to be released to coincide with her goodbye tour.Backed by a five-piece band, she will be putting on a show reflecting the many strands of her musical
career, ranging from her early days as a jazz singer to folk and country material written by friends such as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. As well as her singing, Mouskouri has been prominent in politics in her homeland and was a Euro-MP from 1994 until 1999.However, as a committed pacifist, she felt unhappy about supporting military solutions and eventually resigned. Her desire to make a difference at an international level was underlined when she was appointed a Unicef goodwill ambassador in 1993, a role filled by Hollywood stars Audrey Hepburn before her and Angelina Jolie since. Mouskouri's first United Nations mission saw her travelling to Bosnia to see for herself the horrific effects of war on children there.Moved by the experience, she later staged several fundraising concerts for Bosnia.Music has remained an important part of her life throughout, though. Goodbye Nana
Oct 10 2007 by Our Correspondent, South Wales Echo
GOWNED and bespectacled, Nana Mouskouri is instantly recognisable, and has been for more than 40 years.
In fact, she made her first record 50 years ago and has been touring pretty much constantly since 1960.
However, as she approaches her mid-70s, she has decided to retire from touring; but not before she has said “Goodbye and thank you” to her fans in the form of a Farewell World Tour.
“I’m not actually retiring from singing – if people still want me to sing I will – I’m just retiring from touring,” she said.
“It is logical for me to retire, you see I’ve served music a lot and I hope I have done some nice things, but the world belongs to the young people.
“I cannot be a surprise anymore and it’s hard to find (new) music that I like to sing.
“Also,” she adds, “I wanted to quit while I was still healthy.”
It is fitting that Mouskouri will end her career at the top.
Born in Crete in 1934, she moved with her family to Athens where she was recognised at the prestigious Athens Conservatoire as a unique voice; instead of her vocal chords being of equal size, one is thicker than the other.
She spent eight years at the Conservatoire studying classical music with a career in opera in mind but began experimenting with jazz and eventually was expelled.
Nana’s new habit of singing in jazz clubs led to a meeting with Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis and they struck up a fruitful partnership that won the Greek Song Festival two years running.
From then on there was no looking back. In 1961 Nana recorded her most famous song, The White Rose of Athens and her multi-cultural appeal – she speaks seven languages – saw her become the most successful female singer in history.
She has recorded 450 albums and her 350 million-plus album sales surpasses The Beatles and Elvis combined, with more than 300 gold, platinum and diamond discs.
“I never thought I’d do so much in my life,” she reflected. “
My life has been wonderful. I’ve seen the world, I’ve worked with so many great artists like Quincy Jones and Harry Belafonte.
“But most of all,” she pauses, “I’ve been so lucky to have been loved by so many people. The audiences who come to my shows have always shown me so much love.”
So onto the final tour. The evening begins with a short film about Mouskouri’s career – her autobiography is also due – before she arrives with a seven-piece band to perform pop, classical and jazz songs.
And the tour has been going some while now.
“Yes, it started in 2005 and will end next year in 2008.
“You have to take time to do the whole world and I want to take the opportunity to say to my fans ‘Thank you for listening to me for so many years’.
“After 47 years it won’t be easy.
“You can never leave music if you love it, but now I’ll have more time to listen.”
Nana Mouskouri’s Farewell Tour arrives at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on Thursday, October 25. Tickets cost £27.50-£30 from 029 2084 4444.

November 2007 in Saarbrücken.

Going out on a song: Nana Mouskouri sets off on farewell tour after 40-year career
By Jonathan Brown
Published: 26 October 2007
It could have all been so different. Back in 1966, a young Nana Mouskouri, then relatively little known outside mainland Europe, embarked on a tour of the US with Harry Belafonte.

It was a big moment in her embryonic career. The calypso legend loved Nana's voice but when it came to her choice of eyewear he was unequivocal, insisting she ditch the black horn-rimmed specs on stage.

According to the fairytale legend that is her life story, Nana acceded to his demands but grew deeply unhappy. After two days of sadness it was her turn to deliver the ultimatum to Belafonte – love me, love my glasses. The glasses stayed.

Forty years on, 450 albums, 230 gold and platinum discs and 300 million records sold later, Nana Mouskouri took to the stage of St David's Hall in Cardiff last night still sporting those famous spectacles to begin the first British night of her epic farewell tour.

She will perform before sell-out crowds in Gateshead, London, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham before decamping to Saarbrucken in Germany where the world first took notice of the commercial potential of the young Greek singer with the nightingale voice. It was there that her German language version of "White Rose from Athens" sold more than a million copies.

The Nana musical juggernaut has already rolled across the US, North America and Ireland this year before coming to Britain. After touring mainland Europe, she will then head to Australia, Asia and South America in 2008 where her loyal army of fans are waiting to bid their ageless heroine with the jet black hair and trademark centre parting, a tearful adieu.

It is not bad going for a woman who turned 73 two weeks ago. Though still clearly in rude good health and at the top of her game Mouskouri insists that, after singing for 50 years, it is time to make way for younger performers.

There can be little doubt that few singers coming through today in this increasingly fickle world can expect to emulate the kind of musical longevity she has enjoyed. Nor in this fast-moving digital age, where pop stars must reinvent themselves every few months to stay in touch, can they hope to do so by sticking so closely to the geeky image and basic musical formula that have proved so incredibly popular for Mouskouri over the decades.

Nana was born into a close-knit family in Chania, Crete, moving to Athens at the age of three. The city was occupied by the Nazis for much of her childhood yet her father, a film projectionist, and her mother who taught her the native folk songs, worked hard to get her and her sister into the Hellenic Conservatoire.

She recalls how, by night, her dad used to slip away to fight with the Greek resistance against the German invaders. Times were tough as well as dangerous and despite the money running out she continued to have lessons though her teacher's desire for her to be the next Maria Callas could not survive her nights at the city's Zaki club where she learned how to sing like her new heroines Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

Her route to fame was the Greek national song contest and Mouskouri was later to be something of the patron saint of the later Eurovision movement, first representing Luxembourg because her native land did not have television. She eventually made an emotional performance when the contest was finally held in Greece for the first time in 2006.

Marriage came along in 1961 and her fame spread to France and Germany before her first trip to New York with legendary impresario Quincy Jones. British audiences had to wait until 1968 when she made her first television appearances on Nana and Guests .

At that time, however, the record shops were woefully unprepared and had to desperately seek out some of her records to satisfy the demands of her fans.

Yet the Nana story had another twist yet. In 1993 she was appointed as a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, undertaking a mission to visit children in Bosnia. The following year she was elected as a Member of the European parliament, representing the right wing Greek New Democracy party. She claims not to have liked politics – "it dries your heart" she once said, though despite being heckled by her fellow Eurocrats for her apparent guilelessnes, she proved an effective communicator, even joining forces with her old Eurovision sparring partner Dana when she ran for the Irish Presidency. In 1998, Mouskouri came back to the UK –that time seeking the return of the Elgin Marbles and campaigned across the world for women's rights.

She served only one term as an MEP, returning to her Unicef work and making music. Having divorced her husband in the mid-70s, she lives with her partner Andre Chapelle and plans to dedicate the rest of her life to her family and her humanitarian work. While still wearing those glasses, of course.

Nana Mouskouri
By Jemma Dobson

Nana Mouskouri has been named the most successful female singer in history, having sold over 350 million records worldwide, outselling The Beatles and Elvis combined. Now, after 50 years in the business, she speaks to us as she decides to finally hang up her microphone.

BEHIND those trademark glasses there is a voice that is one of the most notable in history.

Now a 73-year-old grandmother, Nana Mouskouri has released yet another album and is touring the world again - but this time it's her farewell tour.

It was in 1961 that Nana recorded her most famous song, The White Rose of Athens, and her mastery of languages - she speaks half a dozen - ensured that her popularity grew to global proportions.

She even represented Luxembourg in the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest.

Apart from the languages she can actually speak, she has also recorded tracks in Japanese, Korean, Hebrew and Welsh, with a total of over 1,350 songs performed in 100 concerts a year for nearly 50 years.

advertisement"I can remember the first time I thought that I had made it was when I was performing at Royal Albert Hall in London and the organiser came up to me as I was about to go on stage and said Well done, it's a sell-out - that is quite a rare achievement.' I was so happy. This last tour is really a chance for me to say thank you to all my fans and, as best I can, in their language too," she said.

To date she has received more than 300 gold, platinum and diamond records and her breathtaking voice is known and loved by millions across the world.

But it was rather by chance that Nana turned to singing.

It was, in fact, her sister Jenny who wanted to study classical song at the conservatory in her native Athens. But one day a lecturer invited Nana to try it herself. She auditioned and was accepted at once for the unusual qualities of her voice. But instead of restricting herself to classical music, Nana appeared in cafes, singing folklore and jazz, advancing to the status of the "new voice" on the musical scene of Athens of the 1950s. This kind of success did not make her popular with everyone and she was expelled from the conservatory. It was a fateful event, which in hindsight was to pave the path for her success.

And as if singing wasn't enough, Nana also travels the world as a UNICEF ambassador and has made personal donations to help the lives of children in almost every country she has visited. She has also served her native country at the European Parliament by championing the rights of women and children.

And it is these projects she plans to concentrate on when she retires next spring, after the five continent tour concludes in Ireland.

She added: "I want to concentrate on my charity work and leave all the energetic performing to the younger ones now. It is time. I have learned so much and experienced so many wonderful places and cultures. I've been lucky enough to travel and I'll still be travelling. I have homes in Paris, Geneva and Athens.

"But I had fall a few years back which made me realise I am getting a bit old for all this now. I'll leave my singing for the ears of my new grandchild and anything else which doesn't include touring."

l The British leg of Nana Mouskouri's Farewell Tour comes to Manchester's Bridgewater Hall on Wednesday, October 31. For tickets contact the box office on 0161 907 9000 or log on to bridgewater-hall.co.uk

Nana in tribute to 'Big Jim' ahead of her farewell concert
    Tuesday, October 16, 2007
    By Eddie McIlwaine
Diva Nana Mouskouri (73) is due in Belfast on Sunday on her farewell tour before retiring from the stage.
And the singing legend has revealed that she thinks Ulster promoter Jim Aiken, who died eight months ago, was a man in a million.
Mouskouri says so in her autobiography Memoirs (Weidenfeld & Nicolson £18.99) which will be published here to coincide with her concert at the Waterfront Hall.
And her respect for Big Jim, whose passing last February after a brief battle with cancer saddened the province, shines through.
"Infatuated with artists and performers and capable of spending the night glueing posters to walls if he felt the publicity people hadn't done their job," she writes.
But in the next sentence Nana showed that she didn't really know Jim all that well at all.
Describing her first visit to Belfast in the troubled year of 1972 she relates: "Jim insisted on being my driver and while I was there he practically gave up smoking and drinking whiskey to avoid offending me."
What Miss Mouskouri isn't aware of is that Jim Aiken was teetotal all his life.
But that visit in '72 to sing at the King's Hall definitely left an impression on Miss Mouskouri.
She writes about the checkpoints she was stopped at on her way from the airport, the body searches of her audience, the terrible acoustics - and the cold.

    La fille de la Chauve-souris
    Nana Mouskouri releases autobiography
Nana Mouskouri, the singer that has sold more than 400 million albums worldwide and who can boast over 300 gold discs in her long career, has released her autobiography, La fille de la Chauve-souris. The book was presented to the French public this past Sunday, during the Vivement Dimanche TV show which also featured as a special guest Helena Paparizou.
Last Sunday’s Vivement Dimanche show on France 2 hosted by Michel Drucker, popular TV presenter and 2006 Eurovision Song Contest commentator for France, was dedicated to the great lady’s life and work. Nana Mouskouri spoke about her career and sang together with her daughter, Lenou. The show also featured a medley of many video clips where Nana performed solo or together with international mega stars such as Harry Belafonte, Julio Iglesias, Serge Lama and even Nina Hagen!
When asked about her experience at the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest, where she participated for Luxembourg, Nana said that she didn't feel comfortable with the BBC system. The lack of public in front of her didn't help her, "And I didn't perform the song very well" she explained.
Helena Paparizou, the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest winner, was invited as a special guest on the show. Helena sang the Greek version of Céline Dion's classic Pour que tu m'aimes encore. Nana stated that she was really proud that Helena brought the Grand Prix to Greece and went on to sing live together with Helena.
More information on Nana Mouskouri's autobiography can be found here. (in French)

Singer Nana Mouskouri is thrilled to be performing on Sunday in Belfast, a city she ranks among the best in the world

    Sunday, October 14, 2007

Over the course of a whopping six decades in the business, Nana Mouskouri has sold a staggering 350m albums, sang in 11 different languages and has been hailed - quite rightly - as the most successful female singer of all time.

When Sunday Life caught up with her, the humble songstress was busy rehearsing in Paris for the latest leg of her Farewell Tour, which started in 2005 and ends early next year.

"I feel very lucky to have the life I lead," says Nana, who celebrated her 73rd birthday earlier this week.

"Ever since I was a little girl growing up in Greece I have loved to sing.

"I never thought, when I first started out, that I would be loved by so many people.

"I feel very grateful for all the years I've been in this business."

Of course, when Nana first started out in showbiz, it was a completely different world than it is today.

In order to become a success you had to learn your craft, tour as much as possible and there was no Simon Cowell-like figure at the end of the rainbow to offer you a pot of gold, once you sang a few bars of a song on national TV.

Nana began singing lessons at the tender age of 12, while Greece was still living under the shadow of Nazi occupation.

Her father became part of the anti-Nazi resistance movement, but sadly found himself unable to afford Nana's tuition. Undeterred, her vocal coach saw that the young Mouskouri was a true talent and taught her for free.

"I think I was always meant to sing for people," offers Nana. " I don't know what else I would have done with my life if I hadn't been a performer. It's something I've thought about a lot as I've got older."

In 1950, Mouskouri was accepted into the prestigious singing school, the Conservatoire in Paris. She studied classical music with an emphasis on opera.

But the young Nana's mind began to wander and she started to experiment with jazz music. She soon appeared singing at a local jazz club and even landed a radio slot.

However, once her professors found out about her secret life, they expelled her from the school, unwittingly sending her on the path to mainstream success.

"I never just wanted to sing opera - I wanted to try lots of different music. I've always wanted to perform in lots of different languages, try some new styles and give people something to remember," she explains.

"I felt very restrained when I was at the Conservatoire. I suppose it just wasn't for me. I've always thought that a good song belongs to everyone and that's how I've looked at my career from the start. Music shouldn't be tied down."

It was a wise move on Nana's part to experiment with different languages, as the singer became an absolute icon of the 60s and beyond.

But all good things come to an end and she has decided that after spending all of her adult life on the road, she's finally going to retire.

"The reason why I'm doing this Farewell Tour is because I want to say goodbye properly," she reveals.

"If I'm honest, I had never really considered retiring until a few years ago when I broke my ankle. I was supposed to be touring in Asia and ended up having to cancel the dates.

"That was when I realised that perhaps it was time to say goodbye on my own terms, rather than someone else's."

And so, in 2005, Nana booked the dates for what would be her last ever tour. It's a gruelling schedule for anyone and will take just under three years to complete, but she wants to make sure that she bids farewell to all of her fans before she goes.

Of course, that means that music-lovers in Northern Ireland get to see the legend perform for one last encore, so it isn't all bad.

She holds fond memories of her visits here and the time she spent with her dear friend, 'Gentleman Jim' Aiken, the late, great music promoter who died in February.

"I have been to Belfast many, many times in my career and it wouldn't be right if I didn't get to sing once again for you all," she smiles.

"The first time I visited the city, I will always remember for the rest of my life. It was in 1971 and my good friend Jim Aiken personally drove me around the country. He was such a wonderful man and I loved coming to Northern Ireland over the years to perform.

"I think the city has really matured into one of the best in the world and I've now got a beautiful concert hall to sing in, which I'm thrilled about."

On this tour Nana is also accompanied by her daughter Lenou, who performs beside her mother. It's both a touching tribute to family loyalty and also a way of Nana passing on the torch to the younger generation.

"I love having my daughter on stage with me. It means so much to have her there," she says enthusiastically.

"Sometimes I look back on my career and I worry that I wasn't there enough for my family, but I'm reassured to know that they grew up to be such wonderful people."

While you'd be forgiven for thinking Nana will be taking a well-deserved rest once her tour finishes, you'd be wrong. The singing legend will continue her charity work with UNICEF which she began in 1993 and also plans to help others who are as in love with music as she is.

"My charity work is as important to me as anything else in my life and I plan to continue it as much as I can. I think it's important to give back what you can in life," she says. "I'm also going to try to help teach people the craft of songwriting. I think that's a skill that's been lost in recent times and I'd like to help change that.

"I think that the future is for our young people and we have to give them all of our knowledge."

› Nana Mouskouri plays the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on Sunday. Tickets, from Ticketmaster outlets, range in price from £19 to £38.

No.6 in a series made for my Greek classes Never on Sunday - Ποτέ την Κυριακή Melina Merkouri who played " the prostitute that has no price" did the original singing in 1960 and Manos Chadjidakis wrote the Oscar winning music "Ta paidia tou Piraea" Τα παιδιά του Πειραιά. Πετράδια βάζω στο λαιμό Και μια χάντρα φυλακτό Γιατί τα βράδια καρτερώ Στο λιμάνι σαν βγω Κάποιον άγνωστο να βρω Πως θάθελα να είχα ένα και δύο και τρία Και τέσσερα παιδιά From my window I send One and two and three and four kisses That arrive in the port as One and two and three and four birds How I wish I had one and two and three and four children(sons) Who when they become men will be the pride of Piraeus. If I search the world over I'll find no other port Which has the magic Of my port Piraeus. When twilight comes The port sings to me And young men and echoes of songs Fill my port of Piraeus. No one goes by my door For whom I don't feel love And when I fall asleep at night I know that I will dream of him. So to the jewels around my neck I add a charm to bring me luck. Because every evening when I go to the port I am ready to welcome the stranger. How I wish I had one and two And three and four children. He was just a stranger to me
Though at first he hardly knew me
    His devotion, his emotion
Like an ocean swept right through me
For a while he loved me sweetly
And it broke my heart completly
When my true love found a new love
And he left me so alone

    He is gone away
    And it's all over now
    Won't waste a day
    Wondering why or wondering how
    Love didn't last
    And my world went astray
    Time flew too fast
    I will love another day
    What's past is past now
    And he's gone away

Once I couldn't live without him
I was too in love to doubt him
Then my true love found a new love
Now I never think about him
Just sometimes as night is falling
In my heart I start recalling
How he told me when he told me
He would love me all my life

    He is gone away
    And it's all over now
    Won't waste a day
    Wondering why or wondering how
    Love didn't last

GEORGE CARDAMIS: The Benny Goodman Of Greece,YouTube

【From 1:01sec, Nana appears on the stage as a singer ♪♪♪】
A pioneer of jazz in Greece George Cardamis became famous in the late 40s & thru the 50s as a clarinet & sax alto soloist. Born in Corfu -the island of the musicians- he was involved in music from a very early age violin being his first instrument.
He arrived in Athens in his 20s & soon after the war he formed his own band & worked at the best nite clubs of Athens attracting the Athenian elite who would go to the clubs" to listen to Cardamis " the same way nowadays they go to clubs listen to famous singers.
Indeed it seems incredible that a musician who had never travelled abroad had developped such a refine sound & attitude just from the sounds of the vinyl he was exposed to!!!!!!
Besides his fame as a superb exponent of jazz clarinet & sax he also composed several pop hits of his era in swing bolero rumba mambo tango fashion.Among his hits are the swing songs "S'EHASA MA EGO THEN SE KSEHASA (1948)" "IRTHES" 'POS THELO NA SE KANWO DIKI MOU (1951) " OLI MAS ZILEVOUN (1945) " etc as well as his great bolero hit " GIATI NA SE LATREYW TOSO (1950) "
George continued performing with his own band till the late 60's a period where bouzouki music had started getting the attention of middle & high class society in Greece becoming the in thing.Result of this was that musicians who played horns & clarinet gradually found themselves without jobs for lack of demand. Most of them had to give up their main instrument & replace it with guitar or bassguitar or piano or keyboard.
George followed the same trend & in the 70s made the transition from a bandleader & clarinet & sax to playing solo piano at well known Hotels (hilton divani etc).
After the transition he did not seek publicity but most importantly he did not merge into the new style of music that was spreading ...simply put it was too PLAIN for him....As he used to say " They Are Taking Us Back To Cantathes(cantabile songs before the war)..
His love for music (with first & foremost jazz) was immense-a born musician who remained faithful to the music he loved & of which he was a great exponent !!
It is though because of his not seeking publicity & not merging with the new trends in music that George Cardamis has not YET been recognised in Greece for who he was & what he offered ( In my eyes the greatest pioneer of the Jazz of the swing era in Greece).
That is why i am thrilled to be given the opportunity thru YouTube to rectify that & do justice To George Cardamis' invaluable offer.LET THE WORLD KNOW NOW......
The swing bigband piece you are listening to is for the time being the only sample I have of George's playing.
It is from his weekly radio program in the early 50s " THE GEORGE CARDAMIS SEXTET ".
Later on George -after listening to the great American clarinetist Tony Scott- he improved his sound even more by adding that irreplacable breathy sound to a sound that was already gorgeous.
    Oh...by the way....George Cardamis is my father....lol..
Dad i'm proud of you & your artistry...JOB WELL DONE ....YOU SERVED MUSIC RIGHT...& NOW JUSTICE IS BEING DONE.......THANK YOU!!

    Nana Mouskouri says goodbye
    By Neil Docking
Nana Mouskouri is set to retire
"I DON'T want to leave this stage or this world without having been able to say thank you to the audience, to me this is very important.
"I have learned and lived on stage for so many years but if the audiences weren't there I wouldn't have been able to do this - it needed their love.
"It is a very good feeling being able to say thank you, although of course it will be emotional. I have to learn to live without the stage."
The most successful female singer in history, Nana Mouskouri has sold more than 350 million records worldwide - more than the Beatles and Elvis combined.
But after 45 years of touring, the 72-year-old has decided to call it a day and is saying farewell to her fans on a four-year global trek which stops off in Manchester later this month.
Classically trained, since 1959 the Greek performer has sung over 1,350 songs in German, English, French, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Hebrew and Gaelic.

She said: "I speak Greek, French, German, Spanish, English, Italian and Portuguese in the other languages I can make my way a little bit!
"It is very important communicating. Music has no frontiers, no language problems; so this for me has been a way of communicating easier."
In the last 17 years the artist has spent more time painting, and travelling the world as a UNICEF ambassador.
With houses in Geneva and Athens and a home with her husband in Paris, the 72-year-old says she is tired of travelling across the world and wants to spend more time with her family.
She said: "When it came to the year 2000 I couldn't believe I had been singing for that long - you don't realise as the time goes by.
"I never have time to stay anywhere, so it is very tiring physically."
Having worked with the legendary producer Quincy Jones, whom Mouskouri says "gave me soul in my song" and incomparable artists like Bob Dylan, she says she developed a particular admiration for song-smith Leonard Cohen, and spent many times with the Canadian and his partner Suzanne Elrod while he lived in Greece during the 1970s.
She said: "He is one of the great poets of our time. I met him in the early years in Montreal, years and years ago. He is a wonderful man, he inspired me a lot with his music and writing, I adore him.
"I listen to artists who mean what they say and think before they write something and artists like him bring a lot of people together."
When asked about her astonishing record sales, Nana prefers to dwell on the music itself, rather than the units she has shifted.
She said: "I think the best times for me were when I started in Greece, there were so many artists who gave me character and belief.
"The whole of my career has been a highlight because I never expected to become so known everywhere. I was just a small singer.
"I have no regrets because always wanted to be a singer and I think I became the singer I wanted to be. It was a wonderful time in the 60s and 70s - the best times of recording.
"I don't want to go any further because I did a lot and now it is up to young people to continue to do what we have done in the past.
"I have been very lucky and I want to go out with pride and dignity."
Tickets for Nana Mouskouri's show at the Manchester Bridgewater Hall on October 31 are priced £25 upwards and are available from 0161 9079000 and 0161 8321111.
Her Ultimate Collection album will be released on October 22 and a book Nana Mouskouri - Memoirs is expected to be released in the beginning of November.
