European Union turns 50
Europe celebrated its 50th birthday this month with B-list pop singers, a worthy declaration and a romantic TV drama set to the background of the founding of the Coal and Steel community.
European prime ministers and presidents gathered in Berlin for a banquet and a Beethoven concert by the Philharmonic orchestra.
They used the grand occasion to present a three page declaration on the achievements of the EU and its aspirations for the future.

In Brussels, the main seat of the EU institutions, Belgians were also treated to a concert of aging rockers including Britain’s own Kim Wilde and Simply Red and Greek icon Nana Mouskouri.
