Greek singing doyenne Nana Mouskouri retired but still active
Greek singing doyenne Nana Mouskouri, one of the most successful female singers in the world, retired in 2008 after more than five decades in the music business. But the 78-year-old pop and jazz singer, who has sold over 350 million records globally, is not taking it easy.
Besides her work with Unicef (the United Nations Children's Fund), the grandmother is also busy promoting two recent releases - a duets album, Nana & Friends: Rendez-Vous, and a DVD/Blu-Ray release of a 2007 concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
"I'm never on holiday, I don't know what that word is," the singer of evergreen classics like The White Rose of Athens, Guten Morgen, Sonnenschein (Good Morning, Sunshine) and Only Love tells Life! in a telephone interview from Switzerland, where she is now based.
And though one of the classically trained singer's early breakthroughs was winning the Eurovision singing competition back in 1963, she has issues with how such singing contests are churning out instant pop idols.
