Omschrijving: Nana Mouskouri (Chania, 13 oktober 1934) is een Griekse zangeres. Mouskouri (Νάνας Μούσχουρη) werd geboren in Chania op het eiland Kreta. Twee jaar later vertrok het gezin naar Athene (Koukaki). Mouskouri heeft een zus Jenny die twee jaar ouder is en twee kinderen uit haar eerste huwelijk met George Petsilas, Nikolas geboren in 1968 en Eleni geboren in 1970. Het paar scheidde in 1976. In 2003 hertrouwde Mouskouri met Andr Chapelle. Mouskouri woont in Griekenland, Genve en Parijs. Mouskouri werd in 1993 goodwillambassadeur van UNICEF. Ze was van 1994 tot 1998 lid van het Europees Parlement. Mouskouri heeft meer dan 1350 liedjes in verschillende talen gezongen en ze heeft meer dan 300 gouden en platina platen, awards en onderscheidingen verdiend. In september 2004 kondigde de toen 69-jarige Mouskouri aan na een tot in 2008 lopende wereldtournee te gaan stoppen. Haar laatste concert zal in Griekenland gehouden worden. Mouskouri is op 21 september 2007 voor het eerst grootmoeder geworden van een kleindochter Evelia, van haar zoon Nikolas en schoondochter Nine. -------------------------------------------------- Door sommigen omschreven als het Britse antwoord op Bob Dylan. Scoorde in Nederland hits als Atlantis en Universal Soldier. Donovan Leitch wordt in 1946 geboren in het Schotse Glasgow. Zijn vader is poet en treedt af en toe op. Op zesjarige leeftijd zingt hij voor het eerst in het openbaar, begeleid door een piano zingt hij het tekstueel vrij moeilijke nummer There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly van Burl Ives. Samen met wat klasgenootjes begint hij zijn eerste band, The Macabres. Donovan gaat Kunst studeren maar stopt al vrij snel omdat een groot gedeelte van de vakken hem niet interesseren. zijn achttiende wordt hij ontdekt als hij in een Engelse badplaats aan het optreden is. Hij krijgt een platencontract en treedt drie weken achter elkaar op in de televisieshow Ready Steady Go. Dit maakt hem erg populair in Engeland en zijn eerste single, Catch In The Wind, behaalt de derde plaats in de Engelse hitparade. Donovan bereikt ook Nederland, waar Catch In The Wind op nummer 21 komt. Zijn volgende singles, Colours en Universal Soldier bereiken in Nederland de top-10, Sunshine Superman komt zelfs in de top-5. Ook heeft hij succes in de Verenigde Staten. In 1967 gaat hij met de Beatles naar India om te mediteren. Als hij terugkomt brengt hij het album Sunshine Superman uit. Dit wordt een grote hit en hij gaat toeren. In New York weet hij de Madison Square Garden beter dan elke solo-artiest voor hem te vullen. Hij blijft hits scoren, waaronder de nummer 1 hit Atlantis. In 1970 besluit hij het een stuk rustiger aan te doen. Hij trouwt met zijn jeugdliefde Linda Lawrence en ze krijgen een zoon, Julian. Donovan schrijft soundtracks voor de films Brother Sun, Sister Moon en The Pied Piper Of Hamlyn. Tussen 1971 en 1979 brengt hij totaal negen albums uit, maar hij is nauwelijks meer in de hitparade te vinden. Enkel de single Salvation Stomp bereikt in Nederland de hitparade, in 1975 komt piekt de single op de vijftiende plek. In de jaren 80 gaat hij in de Californische woestijn en in 1984 stopt hij met het maken van platen. In 1996 komt hij toch weer met nieuw materiaal, het album Sutras.

Op bijna 85-jarige leeftijd brengt Charles Aznavour 'Duos', een dubbel cd met alleen duetten uit. De eerste plaat bevat uitsluitend Franse liedjes, de tweede Engelstalige, Spaanse, Italiaanse of Duitse versies. Met sommige artiesten zingt Aznavour zelfs dezelfde song in twee talen.
Onder de medewerkers vind je Céline Dion (ESF 88), Julio Iglesias (ESF 70) en Nana Mouskouri (ESF 63) maar ook Johny Halliday, Laura Pausini of Herbert Grönemeyer. Met de Griekse Nana zingt hij 'Mourir d'aimer', het lied van de film met dezelfde titel over de liefdesperikelen van een lerares en een van haar minderjarige leerlingen. De prent was gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal dat leidde tot de zelfmoord van de leerkracht.

I'm not much past the ena dio tria tessera level of modern Greek that they achieved, sadly - but the sound of these words is long embedded, so I'm having a go at the lyrics as sung here. Chorus coming first seems somewhat unusual, and aware that the second verse Ms. Mercouri muttered is missing. But this was originally 1968 BBC primetime, so shortening understandable.

Really did enjoy BBC Four's decision to turn Friday night over to Nana Mouskouri. On the one hand it convinced me that there might actually be a purpose for this channel other than its current role as a dumping ground for laugh a decade panel shows hosted by nepotism incarnate Victoria Coren, interpretive dance workshops and shows nobody watches featuring that personality by-pass that got his knickers in a twist over Katie Melua. On the other hand it reminded me what a great singer Nana was and how it is a terrible shame that she is ignored by all and sundry these days with the notable exception of Paul O'Grady). We've seen justifiable reappraisals of talented individuals who were once considered uncool such as Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond, not to mention status suddenly given to undeserving no-marks like Grace Jones and Dire Straits so it is long overdue that Nana took her rightful place in the former category. For once it is kudos to Auntie.

Here's tonight's schedule for BBC4. At 8pm there's a repeat of BBC1's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. A couple of hours after that is a showing of the next Wallander just a day before it is on BBC1. I guess someone gets paid for cutting-edge arts programming like that. To be fair, it is cutting edge compared with tomorrow evening, where at 8pm there is a profile of Nana Mouskouri followed at 9pm by a concert by Nana Mouskouri, climaxing at 10pm with another concert by Nana Mouskouri.

Here's tonight's schedule for BBC4. At 8pm there's a repeat of BBC1's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. A couple of hours after that is a showing of the next Wallander just a day before it is on BBC1. I guess someone gets paid for cutting-edge arts programming like that. To be fair, it is cutting edge compared with tomorrow evening, where at 8pm there is a profile of Nana Mouskouri followed at 9pm by a concert by Nana Mouskouri, climaxing at 10pm with another concert by Nana Mouskouri.
