They have dressed you with flags
my child,sleep
and I am going to your brothers

A mother is crying above the dead body of her son.Around her sounds of war:tramplings of army feet,drums,cannons vomiting fire and death.She doesn't listen anything,she only listens to her voice lamentating above the dead body of her son.And this is a monologue that passes from the despair of the fait accompli to the memories of a past life,from the realization of her absolute loneliness of her from now on back to her black despair and after to her hope that this sacrifice hasn't
happened for nothing and that her dead son will get in "the vains of everyone and will live".
Epitaph validates the new style of Ritsos with which became widely known and is reckoned as a collection vanguard for the poetry of the decade of 30,as the poet from sensitive observer of the facts transforms himself to a participant at the center of the events that he is narrating.
In 1956 Ritsos sends his collection to Mikis Theodorakis,who is at that time at Paris,writing:"This book was burnt from the dictator Metaxas at 1938 beside the Columns of the Olympius Zeus".
The compose of the music for the bigger part of the collection happens a rainy day,into the parked car of the composer.While waiting his wife finishing purchasing,he marks at the margins of the book,the melodies and at the same night in a meeting with friends at home he plays the music pieces receiving the positive reaction of his guests.
The music-composing Epitaph circulates in two versions.The first with the music direction of Manos Hatzidakis with the voice of Nana Mouskouri and the second one in direction of Mikis Theodorakis with performers Grigoris Bithikotsis an Keti Thymi.In 1963 there was also an third version made by Theodorakis and performing Mary Linda.
This music play is considered as the play opening the road to music-composing of poetry.
