"Good morning," I say to Greek singer Nana Mouskouri, who was vacationing in Rio de Janeiro.

"Well, buon dia, bonjour, buenas dias and guten morgen to you!" she laughs, as the words effortlessly trip off her tongue.

The 72-year-old singer was resting up in Rio before embarking on her farewell tour of North America, which stops Sunday at the Kravis Center before heading to New York's Lincoln Center and Boston.

Mouskouri's initial ambition was to be a classical singer. But she fell in love with the American jazz sounds of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, got booted from the conservatory, and the rest is, well, quite a career.

The singer launched her international career in 1960, when a song from a travel documentary became a hit in Germany.

She was a delegate to the European Parliament in the 1990s, and has been an ambassador for UNICEF for about 15 years. She hopes to conduct master classes and to help musicians develop their talents as artists, not stars.
