Football, ballgowns to come together at Vienna's Opera Ball: organisers

VIENNA (AFP) — Football will be the guest of honour at Vienna's glamourous Opera Ball on January 31, ahead of this summer's European Championship in Switzerland and Austria, organisers said Thursday.
The usual guests from the political, business and entertainment sectors will rub shoulders this year with German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, Swiss President Pascal Couchepin and the coach of reigning European champions Greece Otto Rehhagel, organisers told a press conference.
The European trophy will also be prominently displayed at the top of the main staircase.
The highlight of the Austrian social calendar, the "Opernball" is a glitz and glamour fest that does not come cheap: a single admission ticket costs 230 euros (338 dollars), while a box costs 17,000 euros.
Star tenor Jose Carreras will open the show this year, which will also include a so-called "Footballet" performed by the Vienna Opera ballet.
But the real spectacle is the mixture of celebrities and wannabees and the array of ballgowns ranging from the elegant to the kitschy, twirling around the ballroom until the early hours of the morning.
Austrian socialite Richard Lugner, who invites a star or starlet to accompany him to the ball every year, ended months of speculation Wednesday when he unveiled US strip star Dita von Teese, ex-wife of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, as his guest.
Other notables to attend the event will include Russian-born soprano Anna Netrebko, Greek singer Nana Mouskouri and Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer.
First-time organiser Desiree Treichl-Stuergkh is also introducing a few novelties this year, including a tent at the entrance to provide shelter to the arriving guests and a red carpet to up the glamour factor inside the Opera.
Last year's Opera Ball brought in 1.1 million euros in revenue and organisers expect the same this year.
The event will also be broadcast live on Austrian national television.
